Fall Home Maintenance in Northwest Arkansas
The season is changing and it is time to tackle some fall home maintenance tasks. It is important to prepare your home for fall with tasks such as cleaning gutters, checking roofs, changing air filters, and more. This is to ensure that you do not encounter issues later on in the season, so you can enjoy the season without worries.
1. Clean your gutters
To keep your gutters flowing smoothly, make sure they are cleaned and then cover them with mesh gutter guards to prevent debris from clogging them again. This is also good for rust and corrosion. Make sure to clean your gutters in the fall and cover them with mesh gutter guards.
2. Check for drafts.
When looking at heating costs, you need to be aware that windows are one of the main factors that contribute to this. By installing proper weatherstripping you can reduce this.
When you are concerned about a draft, close a door or window. If the paper moves quickly, you may need to upgrade your weatherstripping.
3. Drain the outside spigots
Shut off all outdoor faucets before the winter season. Avoid freezing any hoses or pipes as this can result in the pipelines rupturing. Doing this will save you a lot of money.
4. Bring your outside furniture in
You might want to store your outdoor furniture in a garage or shed. If you don’t have anywhere to store your items, you should cover them in a water-resistant furniture cover. You could also put the furniture in your garage.
5. Fix any cracks in your driveway
If you want to use a concrete crack sealer, use a good one, and be sure to do it in a timely manner, as you don’t want to see cracks after the concrete is set.
6. Update your air filters.
One other thing to consider is your filters. Make sure that they are not blocked. Clean them monthly and not just once before the fall. It’s not expensive to change them out, and it will save you a lot of money in the long run. Also, you could replace your air filters with reusable ones which can be vacuumed one time before changing them out. These filters can be vacuumed and not replaced.
7. Fertilize your lawn.
Preparing your yard for the fall season means it will stay looking great in the winter. Applying fertilizer in the fall will help to avoid winter damage and keep your lawn green in the spring. Doing this will also help your yard to turn green quicker in the spring, because who wants to look at a sad lawn once it gets nice out?
8. Change your batteries
It is very important that you check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide gas gadgets are working correctly. It is also important to check that they are working at regular intervals.
9. Check your roof
Leaking roof problems can be hard to identify. Leaks can appear anywhere and often are hard to identify. If you notice a leak it is best to stop the leak before the ice and winter winds turn it from an annoyance into a disaster.
Check the roof for small leaks, which can be remedied with a simple fix. Inspect the roof thoroughly, using binoculars if necessary. Check the gutters for blockages, which can be removed with a simple fix. Finally, make sure the roof is flowing freely.
10. Seal or stain your deck
Fall is the perfect time to take on the task of staining your deck. Not only will you not roast in the sweltering summer temperatures, but the cooler fall weather is ideal for staining. Most deck stains recommend that they be used when outdoor temperatures are above 50 and below 90.
